Impact video production for purpose-driven organisations
Documentary-style impact storytelling for NFPs, education institutions, Indigenous-led communities, and health and community organisations across Sydney and NSW.
Speck of Dust is a Sydney video production company specialising in documentary-style impact storytelling for purpose-driven organisations. We work with NFPs, education institutions, Indigenous-led communities, health and community organisations across Sydney and NSW to find and tell the real human stories behind their work. Stories that move people to give, to act, to show up.
The tagline we work to: impact storytelling for purpose-driven organisations.
What we make
We make documentary-grade films, told with substance rather than sentimentality. The people in our films appear as the authority on their own story, celebrated and respected, never used as sympathy props for a cause. That distinction is the whole point. It is the difference between a film that earns attention because it is true and a film that asks for it.
Most engagements produce a body of work, not a single video: a hero film, the cutdowns around it, supplementary pieces, ready to live across the channels your work needs to reach. One shoot, told properly, becomes the body of work your campaign, appeal or program runs on for months.
How we work
Every project starts with listening. We sit with you, understand the people you are trying to reach and what you are trying to do, and give you the space to talk it through. From there we shape the work alongside you. We are not a video factory, and we never run you through a template. What you need depends on who you are trying to reach, so we scope the right shape of work with you, then build the production around it.
This is the part most video companies skip, and it is the part our clients tell us matters most.
How we care for the people in our films
Many of the people in our films are sharing something personal, and we treat that as a responsibility rather than a resource. Consent with us is a real and ongoing conversation, not a form signed on the day, and contributors see how their story is being framed before it goes anywhere. Our job is to celebrate and empower the people on screen, never to extract pity, because dignity is what makes a story worth watching in the first place. On Indigenous-led work we follow cultural protocol and take guidance from the community whose story it is, and on every shoot anyone can pause things at any time, no reason needed.
“Jose and his team created a space where everyone felt safe, supported, and confident on and off camera.”

The problem with most organisational video
You do work that changes things, and you need people to feel why it matters. Generic, fast, point-and-shoot video does not do that. It lists what you do without ever reaching why you do it, and it gets forgotten. The opposite failure is just as common: video that reaches for emotion by flattening the people in it into objects of pity. Funders see through it, and the people you serve deserve better than it.
We work in the space between those two failures. Real people, real outcomes, filmed with care, allowed to speak as the authority on their own lives. Done well, that is both the more honest film and the more effective one.
Selected work
A few outcomes from the work:
- Our appeal films for Aurora Education Foundation were credited as a huge part of their record-breaking $175,000 EOFY appeal. A 15-year partnership.
- Koori Country Cultural Fire trusted us to film cultural burning practice with humility and respect.
- Twelve schools with Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese, each story told properly.

Why organisations choose us
We listen first. As Leila Smith at Aurora Education Foundation puts it, we bring “a great mix of insight, empathy, and the ability to listen.”
The craft is real. Our director’s background is in documentary, including feature work screened at Toronto, Rotterdam and Morelia (Kodak Award for Best Latin American Documentary). Alongside the client work, we keep making independent documentary pieces, the craft thread that keeps the rest of the work honest.
We operate at scale when the work calls for it. The same team and standard has delivered work for some of the largest stadium and live-event screens in the country, seen by millions. It is proof we can carry the largest, highest-stakes productions and bring that level of craft to a story that matters.
And we treat the relationship as the work, not the transaction. Organisations like Dexus keep us on for their culture, learning and development work because we are, in their words, “a trusted partner.”
“A great mix of insight, empathy, and the ability to listen.”

Who we work with
NFPs and charities, education institutions, Indigenous-led communities and organisations, health and disability services, social enterprises, and government and community bodies doing meaningful work. If your organisation exists to make a difference and has a story that deserves to be told properly, that is our lane. It is the not-for-profit and charity video production work we are known for across Sydney.
Frequently asked questions
What is impact storytelling?
It is telling the true human story behind an organisation’s work, so an audience understands not just what you do but why it matters. We use documentary craft, real people and honest narrative rather than slogans or staged scenes, with the aim of building trust and moving people to act.
Who do you work with?
Purpose-driven organisations: NFPs and charities, schools and universities, Indigenous-led communities, health and disability services, social enterprises, and government and community bodies. We also do culture and learning work for values-aligned corporate teams, such as Dexus.
Do you work outside the Sydney CBD?
Yes. We are based in Sydney and work across Greater Sydney and regional NSW, and we travel for the right project across Australia. We have filmed everywhere from Dubbo to Tasmania for the stories that needed it.
What does working with you actually look like?
It starts with listening: we learn your goals, your audience and the people at the heart of the story. From there we agree the right shape of work, plan the shoot, film with a small respectful crew, and edit it into the finished pieces. We agree timelines up front and keep you involved at each stage. We do not work to a fixed template, because the right approach depends on the story.
How much does a project cost?
Every project is scoped to what it actually needs, so we quote each one individually and transparently. Tell us what you are trying to do and we will give you an honest sense of the investment and the options within it.
Why documentary style rather than a standard promotional video?
Because it lasts longer and works harder. Audiences trust real over staged, and the people in the film are treated as the authority on their own experience rather than props for a message. That is both the more respectful approach and, in our experience, the more effective one.
Have a story that deserves to be told properly?
If your organisation has a story that deserves to be told properly, we would love to hear about it.
