Frequently asked questions
What do I need to have ready before I get in touch?
Not a great deal. Most people who contact us start with a story worth telling and a rough sense of when it is needed, and Leila Smith of Aurora Education Foundation, a long-term client, describes the experience as “excellent in process and results.” You do not need a finished brief or a locked budget, and Jose reads every enquiry personally and replies within one business day.
How much does a video cost?
Cost depends on what the project needs: shoot days, crew size, locations and how much edit and motion graphics time is involved. We scope every project individually rather than sending out a standard rate card, because the right approach for a single interview looks nothing like a multi-location campaign. Tell us roughly what you have in mind on the contact form and we will come back with a clear, itemised quote.
What happens on the free fifteen minute chat?
It is a conversation, not a pitch. Jose talks through the story you are trying to tell, what you want the film to achieve and roughly where your budget and timeline sit, then tells you plainly whether Speck of Dust is the right fit. If it is not, we will point you toward someone who is, rather than take on a project we are not suited to.
Do you only work with organisations in Sydney?
We are based in Sydney and most enquiries come from here, but we travel across Australia when a project calls for it. Clients we have worked with include Aurora Education Foundation, Dexus and CESPHN, and an appeal film we made for a Sydney foundation raised $175,000, so location has rarely been the reason a project did not go ahead.
How long after I enquire until I see a first draft?
It depends on the scope agreed on the discovery call, but most projects move from that first conversation to a shoot within a few weeks and into an edit shortly after. A hard deadline, such as a launch date or a reporting cycle, is worth mentioning in your first message, because it shapes how quickly we can move.
Who owns the footage once the project is delivered?
Speck of Dust owns the material we create unless copyright is expressly signed over in writing, and what you receive is a licence to the agreed deliverables rather than ownership of everything filmed. Raw footage is a separately quoted release rather than a default handover. It is worth raising on the discovery call if your organisation expects to reuse footage beyond the edited film, especially for a not-for-profit that also needs material for grant reporting.
