Brand films that move people to act
We treat brand films as short documentaries: real people, speaking for themselves, filmed with documentary craft and edited until the story holds.
Start a conversationSome videos list what you do. The best ones make an audience feel why it matters.
Speck of Dust makes brand films for organisations that want to be trusted, not just noticed. Audiences are surrounded by fast, throwaway advertising, and they can tell the difference between a message performed at them and a story that is true. Think about the best documentaries you have seen. They never sold you anything. They revealed something, and you trusted them for it. That is the approach we bring to your brand.
It is how an appeal film we made became part of the Aurora Education Foundation’s record $175,000 campaign, and how organisations like The Big Issue and schools across Sydney have trusted us with the stories behind their work.
“Speck of Dust’s work is excellent in process and results. They bring a great mix of insight, empathy, and the ability to listen. They keep the content at the right pitch and tone.”
Leila Smith, Aurora Education Foundation
The documentary mindset, applied to your brand
Before anything is filmed, we find the story that drives your mission and explore the why underneath the what. We ask the right questions and we listen to the answers, because the film is built from what we hear, not from a template. We build trust with the people who will appear on screen, so they can be themselves rather than perform. And we never roll a camera until the direction feels right.
For fundraising and cause-led work there is a second discipline on top: being truthful without being tokenistic, contrived, or reinforcing stereotypes. The people in our films appear as the authority on their own story, celebrated and respected, never used as sympathy props for a cause. That is both the more honest film and the more effective one.
What we make
One engagement usually produces a body of work rather than a single video:
- Short documentary-style brand stories. The flagship piece that says who you are and why you exist.
- Fundraising and appeal films. Made to move people to give, at the right pitch and tone. Impact storytelling
- Not-for-profit and NGO storytelling. Program stories, supporter recruitment and showcase films.
- School and university films. Enrolment, program and community stories, told through the people in them.
- Internal culture and values films. The story of who you are, told to the people who live it every day.
- Social cutdowns. Short versions of the hero film, drawn from the same shoot, ready for the channels your audience is on.
Why a story-led brand film works
People trust what feels real over what feels produced. A film built on a true story builds connection instead of resistance, carries complex ideas simply, and keeps working long after a campaign ends, because it is about who you are rather than what you are promoting this quarter. When your audience sees real people rather than actors, your values stop being claims and start being visible.
Why Speck of Dust
- Documentary background, brand know-how. Our director’s craft comes from award-winning feature documentary work, applied to films that have a job to do.
- Story first, always. We find the moment that makes an audience feel it, and build the film around that.
- Care for the people on screen. Contributors are prepared, comfortable and in control of how their story is framed.
- A body of work from one shoot. Hero film, cutdowns and stills, planned together so nothing is wasted.
- Fifteen plus years of craft. From single-room interviews to the biggest live screens in the country.
Frequently asked questions
What is a brand film, exactly?
A short film, sometimes called a brand story video, about who your organisation is and why it exists, built on real people and a true story rather than a script and actors. It sits above any single campaign and keeps working for years.
How long should a brand film be?
Most hero films sit between ninety seconds and four minutes, with shorter cutdowns for social. The right length is the one the story earns, and we will recommend it once we understand what you are trying to do.
What does a brand film cost?
It depends on the scope: shoot days, locations, crew size and how many pieces come from the engagement. Tell us what you have in mind and we will give you a clear, itemised quote.
We are a not-for-profit. Is this the right page?
The craft is the same, and the care is greater. Our impact storytelling page covers fundraising, appeal and program films for purpose-driven organisations in more depth.
Do the people in the film need to be good on camera?
No. Most of the people we film are not performers, and that is the point. Our job is to create the conditions where they can be themselves, and to frame and edit so their truth carries the film.
Have a story that deserves to be told properly?
Whether it is a flagship brand film or the start of a body of work, we would love to hear what you are trying to do.
